China, officially the Republic of China, is a country in East Asia.
Following the Xinhai Revolution and a subsequent civil war, China began rapidly modernizing under the presidency of Sun Yat-sen. Chiang Kai-shek would rise to power shortly after his death. Chiang cracked down on communism during the Red Purge. Roughly 80,000 people were killed and China was transformed into a single-party state under a military dictatorship. Japan declared war on China following the Yalu Bridge Incident, ending in a Chinese victory by 1942. Despite being neutral during World War II, China favored Nazi Germany due to the latter's help with modernizing the National Revolutionary Army. China would emerge as a superpower during the Cold War and would be seen as the head of the "Eastern Bloc."
China is a federal semi-presidential constitutional republic.
