- Rome, Italy – January 5: Point of Divergence Foreign Minister Sidney Sonnino is thrown out of the cabinet after it is revealed that he has been misleading the government. He is replaced by former Prime Minister Giovanni Giolitti, who later pledges total neutrality in the Great War.
