The United States emerged at a time when kings, dukes, and princes ruled over realms and a republic was typically an elective monarchy. But for the world, a democratically elected head of state was considered revolutionary. It is very possible that, rather than be a constitutional republic, the United States becomes a constitutional monarchy.

Point of Divergence[edit | edit source]

  • 1st Point of Divergence: Guy Carleton, resting at his home Quebec City on the Christmas Eve of 1773 is awoken from his sleep after a window pane is broken by one of three burglars in his home. He heads downstairs and startles them, causing one of them to stab him in the gut. Governor Carleton is found dead the following morning by his guards. Several months later, London passes the Intolerable Acts, which includes a provision taxing the Catholic Church, among other anti-French and anti-Catholic measures. As a result, the Canadas turn more sympathetic to their American neighbors and Canadien nationalists aid the Americans in their fight against Britain.
  • 2nd Point of Divergence: Elector Maximilian III Joseph of Bavaria recovers from smallpox, extending his life by five years. Without a fear of Britain allying with Austria, King Frederick II recognizes the United States as a legitimate government and sends volunteers to fight for their cause. He also sends Prince Henry I, his younger brother and a very effective commander, to lead troops.
