Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev (born 2 March 1931) is a Soviet politician who served as the 1st President of the Soviet Union. The first democratically elected leader of the Soviet Union, Gorbachev also served as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1985 to 1993, the chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet from 1988 to 1989, and chairman of the Supreme Soviet from 1989 to 1990. Initially a Marxist–Leninist, Gorbachev became an advocate for social democracy and successfully reformed the Soviet Union into a democratic state. His presidency is marked by the New Union Treaty and the subsequent Soviet economic miracle of the 1990s.
