The Confederate States of America (CSA), commonly known as the Confederate States (CS or C.S.) is a nation located in North America, bordering the United States to the north and Mexico to the south.
The Confederate States' establishment was preceded by what was the Southern United States' reaction to the election of the anti-slavery Abraham Lincoln to the Presidency in 1860. South Carolina was the first state to secede from the United States and would be joined by eleven more states by mid-1861. A lengthy war would last between the Union (the United States) and the Confederacy (the Confederate States) between 1861 and 1867, ending in a Confederate victory after the latter earned diplomatic recognition from various European great powers and the Union's declining will to fight. The Treaty of Paris officially ended the War of Secession and solidified the Confederate States' political standing.
The enslavement of Black people would be a dominant political issue for the Confederate States throughout the 19th century. Most major powers had abolished slavery and condemned the Confederate States' practice of slavery, however due to the nation's standing as an agricultural powerhouse, the western opposition to Confederate slavery was limited to only words and not action. Slavery would remain legal in the Confederate States until 1894, following the end of the Confederate-American War. After the abolition of slavery, the Confederate States began to rapidly industrialize as former slaves were desperate for work. Most former slaves would migrate to cities and work for newly opened factories for low wages.
