The Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) is a major political party of the Soviet Union. Established by Vladimir Lenin in 1917, it was the sole governing party until 1990 when the Congress of People's Deputies modified Article 6 of the Constitution, ending the Communist Party's monopoly. It is the largest political party in the Soviet Union.
Following the reforms pioneered by Mikhail Gorbachev, the Communist Party moved away from Marxism–Leninism towards traditional socialism and social democracy.
